A taller riser and shorter tread create a steeper stair. The steeper the stair, the more difficult it is to use, especially for the young and old. Steep stairs increase the likelihood of falls and accidents.

New York State allows a 9″ deep tread and a 8-1/4″ tall riser. We recommend instead to have an 11″ deep tread and a riser height closer to 7″ tall.
